Chief Executive Officer – Matamata Medical Centre
Matamata Medical Centre (MMC) is seeking an exceptional Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the organisation in a full-time, permanent capacity. This is a rare opportunity to take the helm of a well-established and highly regarded community medical centre at a genuinely exciting moment in its history.
MMC has cared for the Matamata community for many years and is known for its strong patient relationships, its committed team, and the quality of care it provides. MMC also operates a busy walk-in acute service and works closely with local and regional health partners. It is located in the Pohlen Hospital precinct and works closely with allied health providers to deliver integrated, patient-centred care.
In this newly created role, MMC is bringing clinical and operational leadership together under this one executive position. As CEO, you will be the organisation’s single point of accountability, reporting directly to the Board of Directors and providing unified leadership across the team. With a new extension opening in 2026, you will lead MMC into a new era, with real scope to shape its strategy, culture, and future, while ensuring continuity of care throughout the transition.
Key accountabilities for this role include:
- Leading organisational strategy and translating the Board’s direction into results.
- Ensuring financial sustainability and maximising the use of funded services.
- Building strong relationships across the health sector.
- Providing leadership and oversight across the clinical and operational teams.
- Setting and leading a positive, high-performing, and inclusive culture.
- Championing culturally responsive care aligned with the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Are you the person we are looking for?
MMC is looking for a transformative, authentic, and visionary leader who builds trust, drives positive change, and thinks strategically about the future of primary healthcare. In addition to undertaking the above, you will:
- Bring senior leadership/executive experience and a proven track record of leading through change.
- Have strong financial and strategic management capability.
- Be confident engaging with a Board and with external stakeholders at a senior level.
- Have a demonstrated ability to build and lead high-performing teams.
- Bring excellent communication skills across clinical, administrative, and external audiences
Ideally, you will also have:
- Experience in, or knowledge of, the New Zealand Health System.
- A relevant tertiary qualification, for example, in business or health management, although equivalent senior leadership experience will also be considered.
- Experience operating within a governance or Board-delegated environment
We are looking for someone whose values align with the culture of MMC. You will be community-minded, lead with integrity, and bring a genuine commitment to equity and quality care.
In return
You will join a respected community practice at a pivotal moment, with:
- A newly created leadership role with real scope to shape the organisation.
- A larger and extended facility with the expansion available in the spring.
- A supportive Board and a committed, values-driven team.
- The lifestyle of the Waikato, with Matamata offering a friendly community and easy access to Hamilton, Tauranga, and the Bay of Plenty.
