This is a senior and purposeful role sitting at the heart of DPA’s commitment to reducing drowning among Pacific communities in Tāmaki Makaurau.
DPA was formed with a vision of an Auckland free from drowning. Pacific peoples are disproportionately affected by drowning, and this role exists to change that. In the role of Aquatic Educator, you will deliver high-quality drowning prevention education in culturally safe, Pacific-led ways, while also building DPA’s internal capability and strengthening community relationships across Pacific networks, churches, and youth groups.
The time allocation for the accountabilities in this role is approximately 70% education delivery and 30% Pacific engagement, co-design, quality improvement, and internal capability-building. Key accountabilities for this role include:
- Delivering drowning prevention education that improves participant knowledge, competence, and safer choices in, on, and around the water.
- Acting as DPA’s Pacific Peoples specialist in community settings, ensuring delivery approaches align with Pacific values, worldviews, and lived realities.
- Building and sustaining trusted relationships with Pacific communities, churches, and relevant agencies that influence Pacific water safety.
- Representing DPA at targeted community events such as Pasifika Festival, church congregations, and youth groups.
- Reviewing and improving DPA’s drowning prevention education effectiveness for Pacific peoples, including developing an annual Pacific improvement action plan.
- Building internal capability across DPA so staff can apply a Pacific Peoples lens in their work.
- Applying a Pacific cultural safety lens to all delivery planning and in-session facilitation.
- Completing quality reporting, evaluation, and programme improvement as directed by GM Operations.
Are you the person we are looking for?
In addition to undertaking the above, you will:
- Have a deep understanding of Pacific values, beliefs, and worldviews, and be fluent in a Pacific language.
- Bring the ability to engage with diverse Pacific communities (e.g., Samoan, Tongan, Cook Islands Māori, Niuean) and adapt approaches accordingly.
- Bring strong water competence, including being able to comfortably swim 500m unaided and tread water or float for 5 minutes.
- Have effective in-water group management skills, including in both normal and emergency situations.
- Hold a current workplace first aid certificate and a full New Zealand driver’s licence.
- Be prepared to work some evenings and weekends and be able to travel outside of Auckland on occasion (DPA operates as a 7-day-a-week business).
Ideally, you will also have:
- Adult teaching certification (Level 3 or 4) and/or equivalent experience.
- NZC in Aquatics (L3) Swim and Water Safety Teacher qualifications and/or experience in health and safety and risk assessment.
- Previous experience with Pacific media or community communications.
- Other recent personal and professional development in sport and recreation, community service, health promotion, or cultural competency.
We are looking for someone whose values align with the culture of DPA. You will be self-directed, show initiative, communicate clearly, and enjoy working as part of a dedicated team. You will be an active listener with a genuine passion for Pacific communities and be able to build strong, trusted relationships with participants, colleagues, and stakeholders.
In return, you will join a supportive team with hands-on leadership, a positive culture, and genuine opportunities for professional growth and career development.
